The Collective Intelligence Design Playbook

The United Nations Development Programme is seeking new ways to tackle the global sustainable development goals through using best practice innovation methods and approaches. Nesta's Centre for Collective Intelligence was looking to bring together tools and methods that they had been prototyping with the United Nations Development Programme into a playbook for collective intelligence design. They commissioned Liminal to help create the playbook, which explores how to mobilise people, data and technology to tackle complex challenges. Holis was part of the Liminal team.

Building upon Nesta's research and codification of the four primary types of collective intelligence, we developed a five stage process for collective intelligence design. We then assessed over 30 existing tools to identify and modify best practice methods that could be used to supplement the new tools that Nesta had created. These were then described in a detailed playbook comprising of 222 pages, 45,000 words, 41 activities, guides and exercises, 69 prompt cards and 1 mission; to help us all to tackle complex and global challenges through combining people, data and technology. This playbook has now been widely adopted and is now in the process of being rolled out to members of the 60 UNDP Accelerator Labs around the world through a range of training sessions and is also available to download via the Nesta website.
